Why growing at 2,400 metres changes everything

2 min readBy Riverdale Flowers

At 2,400 metres above sea level, the Aberdares occupy a climatic position that most commercial flower farms never come close to. The difference is not marginal — it is fundamental, and it shows in every stem we harvest.

Temperature and the growing cycle

The most significant effect of altitude on cut flower quality is temperature differential. In the highland growing zone, daytime temperatures during peak season average 18–22°C, while nights can drop to 8–12°C. That 10 to 14 degree swing between day and night does something lower-altitude farms simply cannot replicate: it slows cell development.

Slower cell development means denser stem walls, more compact flower heads, and — critically — a measurably longer post-harvest vase life. Buyers who have sourced eryngium from both highland Kenya and lower-elevation origins report a vase life difference of four to seven days. For a product that travels by air freight and then sits in a wholesaler's facility before reaching the florist, those extra days are commercially significant.

Light quality at altitude

Equatorial sunlight at 2,400 metres is more intense than at sea level — thinner atmosphere, less filtering, more UV. For cut flowers this drives deeper colour saturation. Our craspedia is a vivid, saturated gold. Our eryngium achieves a blue-violet intensity that consistently draws comment from buyers encountering the product for the first time.

What this means for buyers

When you source from Riverdale Flowers you are not simply buying a species. You are buying a growing outcome — stems that are structurally stronger, colours that are more vivid, and vase life that outperforms alternatives. These are not marketing claims. They are the predictable result of geography and elevation, and they are observable by any experienced buyer.

We invite first-time buyers to request samples specifically to evaluate the difference. Our sales team can arrange sample shipments, and we are confident the product speaks for itself.
